The four prompts
I tried this on my husband, who still refuses to work for me. The results were genuinely wild — dozens of tailored applications built overnight while nobody was awake to do them.
Four prompts, all in the same chat so it keeps the context. Upload the resume first as a file, then work down the list.
Get a recruiter's read on your resume
Upload your resume, then paste this. You get 20 job titles you are actually qualified for — including a few you would never have searched — plus the exact words the applicant tracking systems are scanning for.
Rewrite it into a master template
Same chat. The Google XYZ formula is the one recruiters keep asking for: accomplished X, as measured by Y, by doing Z. Everything gets a number attached to it.
Pro tip
Run the rewritten resume through a slop-remover before you use it. AI-written resumes have a smell — the same six adjectives, the same rhythm — and recruiters clocked it about a year ago.
Send agent mode job hunting
Now the trick. Hit the plus, turn agent mode on, and paste this. It opens a browser and goes looking — every match from the last seven days, scored, with a tailored resume already written for each one.
Let it apply
The wild part. It works through the list and fills in the applications itself. Read the review section below before you run this one.
Where agent mode lives
Agent mode is the setting that lets ChatGPT drive an actual browser — clicking, typing, scrolling, filling in forms — instead of just talking about websites. It is a toggle, not a separate app.
Hit the plus in the message box
Bottom left of where you type. Same menu you use to attach a file.
Turn on agent mode
You will see a small browser window appear once it starts working. Leave it visible — that window is how you catch mistakes.
Sign in when it asks
It will hit LinkedIn and Indeed login screens and hand control back to you. Type your password yourself, then let it carry on.
Stay nearby for the first run
Not the whole time. Just long enough to see it get through the first two applications without doing anything embarrassing.
Before it hits submit
This is the prompt I would not skip. Run it after prompt three and before prompt four. It makes the agent show its working, holds it to what is genuinely on your resume, and stops it guessing at questions that have consequences.
Tailored is not the same as invented
An agent that wants to score well on a match will happily add a qualification you do not have. You are the one who signs the application and sits in the interview. Read what went out.
The honest catches
It works. It also fails in ways that are funny from a distance and mortifying up close. Here is the real picture.
Agent mode misfires
It is a robot driving a browser. It picks the wrong dropdown, misreads a date field, attaches the wrong file, answers a screening question with something odd. Every one of those goes out with your name on it. Review before it submits — that is not optional advice, that is the deal.
Plenty of sites block it
Job boards actively fight automated browsing. Expect CAPTCHAs, logged-out states, redesigned pages it cannot read, and application portals that simply refuse. Some of your list you will end up doing by hand. That is normal.
It is not really 500 jobs
It is slow — each application is a browser session with a lot of clicking. Realistically you get tens overnight, not hundreds. Still more than you were going to do on a Tuesday night, but set your expectations there.
You are handing over a logged-in browser
Sign in yourself, keep the window where you can see it, and do not leave it running unattended on anything holding payment details. Log out of the job sites when it is finished.
Volume is not the strategy
The genuinely useful part is prompt one and two — finding titles you did not think to search and a resume that gets past the filter. The applying is the party trick. Ten good applications still beat sixty sprayed ones.
